Located at the southwestern entrance to Beirut Souks, Bab Idriss was the site of an arcaded street leading to the Roman Hippodrome. The square is adorned with Promenade à l’Hippodrome by Xavier Corbero (Spain), which consists of 18 basalt and two cast iron sculptures evoking a group of people on their way to the races.

In 2013, a portion of the square was renamed to honor the departed Lebanese former Minister and Member of Parliament Nassib Lahoud.
